THE ART OF GETTING AWAY

A weekend that actually feels like a getaway

You do not need a packed itinerary to come home with a good story. A few thoughtful choices can make a short break feel like time well spent.

Choose the feeling before the destination

Start with what you want more of: a quiet morning, a good meal, a long walk or a fresh view. That choice makes it easier to pick a destination and to say no to activities that do not fit. A weekend built around food and neighbourhoods needs a different pace from one built around a mountain outing.

Give each day one anchor

Choose one activity you would be disappointed to miss and build the rest around it. A guided walk can introduce a city; a boat outing can give a coastline a new perspective. Once that anchor is in place, leave the time on either side open. Travelling between stops is part of the day, and generous buffers are more useful than a long list of possibilities.

Stay close to the places you want to enjoy

Before choosing accommodation, put your main stops on a map. A cheaper room on the edge of a city may come with more travel time. There is no universal best neighbourhood: choose according to your route, your mobility and how you want to spend the evening. Check the actual transport options for your dates.

Make a small list, not a schedule

Keep a few cafés, viewpoints or neighbourhoods in reserve. Use them when they fit naturally into the day rather than treating them as obligations. Save your ideas in one place, keep a weather-friendly alternative, and let the best part of the weekend be the part you did not need to hurry.
